Who are The Lions?
The Lions are a group of men and women from all walks of life who belong
to an international organisation whose motto is "We Serve". Lions give
practical help to, and raise funds to support anyone in need either locally,
nationally or internationally. Beneficiaries locally have been play groups,
youth organisations, senior citizens, the disabled, and so on. Lions also
have their own social events, including quizzes, skittles, challenges
with other clubs, excursions, foreign trips, social evenings, an annual
anniversary dinner/dance plus other activities.
Who are Callington Lions?
The Lions club of Callington was formed in 1976 and is one of 76 clubs
in the south-west of England which covers Cornwall, Devon and Somerset
(District 105SW)
Callington Lions raise funds from annual events such as Honey Fair,
Gala Day and the "Walk Through the Daffodils" as well as other big events
such as concerts, pantomimes, duck races, bingo, seasonal draws, provision
of bars, barbeques and stalls at events in Callington and the surrounding villages.
Apart from the fun and fellowship of participating in the above events, members
get great satisfaction in 'serving' the local community. Membership in the Lions
Organisation is open by invitation to both men and women. Our club consists of
both male and female members drawn from Callington and district. We are always keen
to attract new members and people to share in the fun and satisfaction of the effective
Community Service for which they have become respected locally.
What do we do Locally?
Callington Lions play an active part in community events including
the organising of an annual Summer Gala. Here the community is invited
to an afternoon and evening of free entertainment which includes an opportunity
for other community groups to participate.
In the autumn, Honey Fair is an increasingly popular day when people from
all over Cornwall flock to Callington to take part in this traditional
charter fair. Other activities cater for a whole cross section of our
community, whether it's senior citizen parties, a daffodil walk or Christmas
pantomimes for families. Hardly a month passes without something to look forward to!
Our fund raising activities have meant that we have been able to meet many
needs locally and offer support where it is needed. Through the contacts
Lions offer, we have been able to offer support at times of need in disasters
such as the Boscastle flood and the Indian Ocean Tsunami. The close links between all
Lions clubs of the world ensure that aid is delivered directly to the people
affected without any deductions for administration.
What is Lions International?
Through Lions International, support is given by other Lions Clubs in
the third world and other areas of desperate need, to develop campaigns to
prevent blindness, provide clean water and basic amenities that many take
for granted in the west, as well as sending aid to innocent peoples affected
by natural disasters and the result of modern day conflict and unrest.
Should I join? What’s in it for me?
It is a chance to feel part of the community, meet people and make a difference.
Callington Lions and their partners enjoy both their Community Service
and Social activities, of which there are many.
If you think you may be the sort of person that would like to share
